Autumn Term 1 2016
PCSO Helps the Children Stay Safe during Halloween and on Bonfire Night
KS2 children had a talk by PCSO Sarah Stanley about Halloween and bonfire safety. The children listened to the message about being safe and encouraging others to be safe also. I'm sure that this Halloween and Bonfire night everyone will remember to make sure adults always know where they are, to wear something bright so they can be seen and never handle fireworks!
Football League Night
The final football league night before the winter break finished with one win, one draw and one lose. The team played well and showed a great attitude in all games especially when they started to lose their first game. An update of the league positions will be made available soon.
Harvest Service 2016
The children celebrated Harvest in the Church of St Philip and St James on the last day of term where they sang, danced and recited poetry. They were fantastic! We would also like to thank all the families who supported the Hampers of Hope charity with their extremely generous donations of food items, which will go to our local food bank to support families in need.
Year 4 step back 2000 years!
This half term the Year 4 children spent a fun filled day taking part in a Roman Workshop led by 'Makers of History.' They studied Roman artefacts, wrote greetings and their names in Latin, using a quill! The children then had an opportunity to play Roman board games using Roman Maths, wined and dined at a Roman banquet and now know which foot to put forward first when entering a Roman house.
Finally they learnt how to march as Roman centurions, how disciplined the Roman legions were and the strategies they used to make them one of the most formidable foes. An amazing day.
Halloween Fun for Reception Children
This week the children in Reception have been decorating Halloween biscuits. The pumpkin shaped ginger biscuits were very kindly donated by a parent and the children had great fun using the icing and sprinkles to decorate their biscuits to make a spooky treat!
Children get ready for their Harvest Service
The children today were visited by volunteers from Hampers of Hope who help people in our local community by providing, amongst other things, a food bank.
As we encourage the children to 'make a difference', this opportunity allows the children to bring in food from home to be given to those in need, thus making a difference to someone else's life.
We will celebrate the Harvest in the Church of St Philip and St James on Friday 28th October at 9.30 am. The children are asked to bring their donations then, and of course, families and friends of the school are more than welcome to join us.
Macclesfield Area Schools Finals
The Year 5/6 tag rugby team took part in the Macclesfield School Sport Partnership Tag Rugby School Games Final at Macclesfield Rugby Club. There were 19 teams in the competition, split into 4 sections. The first match against Park Royal was a 1-1 draw. The team displayed some great passing and quick dodging skills in their second match against St Benedict's winning 2-0. The team were on a roll and again showed excellent team work and determination to narrowly beat Rainow 3-2. They just needed a win or draw from their last match to reach the semi final, but unfortunately, against the run of play, the team lost 1-0 to Bollington Cross. The players were a bit disappointed not to reach the semi final, as they had already beaten the Rainow who were the winners of our section, but all the players should be very proud of how well they all played both individually and as a team.
Year 1 are Little Champions - Fun at Wilmslow High School
The 10 Y1 children had a great afternoon at The Little Champions Festival, which was held at Wilmslow High School. The children rotated around 10 different stations taking part in a variety of activities designed to improve their agility, balance, coordination and speed. During the festival they balanced along a beam, aimed a ball at some cricket stumps, jumped over hurdles, rolled along mats and shot into a basketball ring to name just a few of the activities covered. Everyone tried hard to develop their skills and improve their performance with each task. And, as you can see in the pictures, they had fun too!!
Year 3 Geography Trip
Year 3 had a very enjoyable morning walking along the River Bollin. The children were learning about river features and mapping what they saw on sketch maps. We were extremely lucky to see and watch a heron walk along the river and catch a fish!! We enjoyed playing pooh sticks on the bridge to see how the river flow varied. Great fun! We are now returning to class to write our River adventure stories linked to The Wind in the Willows.
Year 6 have been evacuated to Bury!
As part of their work in history , Year 6 have been learning all about life during World War 2. In particular, they have been considering how this impacted on children and what it would have been like to have been evacuated. The children visited Bury Transport Museum and the Bury Art Gallery where they talked with volunteers about different World War 2 artefacts and went in an air-raid shelter. They then travelled on a steam train to Rawtenstall where they took part in a mock selection process and were chosen by host families. All children returned safe and sound and relieved to be returning home.
Key Stage 2 try Judo
KS2 have the amazing opportunity to try the martial arts skills of Judo and maybe they too could compete in the Olympics and win a medal! More information about the club that will run before school soon will be sent home with the children or via ParentMail.
We have been working successfully with this group for several years and the aim is for children to try Judo within a familiar and safe environment with the hope that they might get the bug for Judo and join one of several local clubs.
Year 3/4 Girls' Football Team gain Silver
The Year 3/4 girls took part in their first 5 a side football tournament at Wilmslow High School, some of the girls had never played football except in PE lessons before but are obviously a very talented team as they came away in second place and silver medal winners!

Won 3-1 v The Wilmslow Academy
Won 5-4 V St Anne's
Lost 1-3 v Ashdene
There were some very close matches against some very good teams. The whole team worked so hard on a hot and sunny afternoon. Their team work, communication and spacing improved with each game. This improvement was clear with some fantastic tries scored in the last 3 games.
New Season - New Team - First League Night
We played our first league netball matches this evening. As a new team they worked hard and did not do too badly!
The scores were
v St Anne's 0-3 Lost
v Gorsey Bank 0-1 Lost

Everyone played well and tried really hard. There was some very red faces after playing 4 matches on the run without a break. Some of the matches were very close and we were unlucky to lose. Throughout the evening the team improved and their confidence grew with each game.
Well done to everyone!

Last year the Year 5 class worked hard to look after our vegetable garden and it certainly paid off looking at the pictures below!!
Year 5 reach new heights
Year 5 were out of this world this week learning about the orbit of the Earth and Moon around the sun.
Rev Jane Parry leaves the Church of St Philip and St James
Sunday saw the final service in St Philip's Church by Reverend Jane. This concluded her 8 and a half year ministry in Alderley Edge and was celebrated with a moving service of thanksgiving. We wish her all the best in her new parish in Birkenhead.
Tour of Britain
The whole school cheered on the cyclists as they made their way through Alderley Edge during Stage 3 of the Tour of Britain. It was an amazing event and the children thoroughly enjoyed the event. Many thanks to the staff and parent helpers but a huge thank you must go to Ilana Higham of Aldeli for arranging a great viewing area for the whole school. If you call in for a coffee or lunch then please pass on our thanks!! . Not only was it a safe area but the children had an excellent view of all the action. Many supporters from the village and much further away commented on the children's excellent behaviour and energy level!!
