Chinese New Year in Years 1,2 and 3!
Years 1,2 and 3 enjoyed their Chinese New Year celebrations, they explored the Chinese Myth that explains the 12 year cycle of the Chinese calendar through a story and learnt about the traditions associated with the New Lunar Year and the lucky foods: fish for good luck; dumplings for wealth and noodles for a long life. It is also bad luck to have your hair cut during this period as it is believed that you are cutting away your wealth. The class also learned which zodiac animal they are and the characteristics they may share. They then tried using chopsticks to pick up different food and learned that a third of the worlds population use chopsticks! Some children had to use their resilience and perseverance skills as this was tricky! The children also created their own Chinese dragon and ended the session receiving the lucky red envelopes, with 2 hands, and trying to say the traditional greeting 'Kung hei fat choi". Thank you to Serena Clarke and Raffy Liu for organising and delivering the session and sharing your culture with us all.
