La FĂȘte des Rois
Year 4 started their French learning this term by exploring a traditional French festival. La Fête des Rois (the Festival of the Kings) is celebrated on the 6th January each year and commemorates the visit of the Three Wise Men to baby Jesus. It is marked by the tradition of 'la Galette de Rois', where a small figurine or coin (la fêve) is baked inside a cake that is shared with the family. Traditionally, the youngest child hides under the table and decides which member of the family gets which piece of cake. The member of the family who finds the 'fêve' then becomes King or Queen for the day. Year 4 acted this celebration out in groups, with the youngest member of the group deciding which piece of (paper) cake would be given to each person, then they all turned over their "cake" and revealed our Kings and Queens.
